Crisis

If you are not safe, start here.

Call or text 988.

988 is the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. It answers calls and texts at any hour of any day, from anywhere in the United States, and it is free. 988lifeline.org

If anyone is in immediate danger, call 911.

The Scholar’s Bureau is not a crisis service and it cannot act as one. Please use the numbers above first. They are answered by people who are trained for this, and they are answered now.

The agent stops, and it says why.

Students and parents can write to their counselor inside The Scholar’s Bureau, and an AI agent answers some of those messages. Before it writes anything, every message is read against a fixed list of phrases about self-harm, about being hurt by someone, about not wanting to be alive, and about not eating. The agent can raise the same flag on its own when it reads something that worries it, however faintly, and even when it is written as a joke. Either one produces the same result.

When it fires, the agent stops. It does not answer whatever else was in the message, and it does not carry on with the essay or the deadline that was being discussed. It replies with the 988 line and the 911 line, quoted in full below, and it says that it is software rather than a person and that it is not the right help for this.

That reply is fixed text rather than something the software writes each time, so there is no version of it that comes out wrong.

The reply, in full
I’m stopping here. What you just wrote matters more than anything else in this thread. I’m software, not a person, and I’m not the right help for this. If you are thinking about hurting yourself, or you are not safe right now: • Call or text 988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, any time, day or night. https://988lifeline.org/ • If someone is in immediate danger, call 911. • What The Scholar’s Bureau does when you write something like this: https://thescholarsbureau.org/crisis I have put this in front of a person at The Scholar’s Bureau and in front of your counselor, not as another message in this thread, as something they have to pick up and answer. I have not answered anything else you asked, and I am not going to until a person has read this.

This happens on a parent’s messages as well as a student’s. The sentence a parent is most likely to write is about their child rather than about themselves, and the check is written to catch both.

It also happens on an account whose messaging has been paused over an unpaid invoice. The message is stored and answered anyway, and the reply adds a paragraph saying plainly that everything else on the account is still paused. An unpaid invoice can never be the reason a child in crisis reads a billing notice instead of a phone number.

What it adds on a paused account
One thing so you are not waiting on something that will not come: messages with your counselor are still paused on this account, and this reply does not change that. The 988 line above is not. It is open to you right now, whatever is going on with the account.

The 988 line is also on the screen beside a paused account before anybody writes anything.

One record, and a person has to close it.

The reply and the record are written in the same instant, by one database statement, and The Scholar’s Bureau cannot store one without the other. The record is marked critical, and nothing in the software is able to lower that. It names the conversation and the counselor assigned to that student, and it stays open until a person opens it and marks that they have read it. Closing it takes a second action and a written note of what they did. Both actions record who took them and when, from the signed-in account rather than from anything the software is told.

Neither the message nor the reply can be edited or deleted by anyone signed in to The Scholar’s Bureau. That includes the person who wrote it and it includes The Scholar’s Bureau staff. The database refuses the change and says why.

Nothing here is watching, and we do not promise a time.

Nobody at The Scholar’s Bureau is monitoring messages as they arrive. Writing something does not place a telephone call, send a text message, send an email, or set off an alarm anywhere. The Scholar’s Bureau sends nothing out of band to anyone by any channel. The record waits in a queue until the assigned counselor or a member of The Scholar’s Bureau staff opens that queue and reads it.

We do not promise how quickly that happens. We will not print a number we have no way to keep. 988 is answered now. This is not.

The Scholar’s Bureau does not provide mental health care, therapy, medical advice, or emergency response, and nobody here is licensed to. Our counselors advise on college applications, and that is the whole of what they are engaged to do.

The agent’s reply says it has put this in front of a person at The Scholar’s Bureau and in front of your counselor. That happens. It means a record is placed where those people will see it the next time they look, and it does not mean somebody is reading it at that moment.

Who sees what.

The reply sits in the conversation, so the person who wrote the message reads it where they wrote it. The record goes to the counselor assigned to that student and to The Scholar’s Bureau administrators, and to nobody else. It is not shown to the student or to the parent, because it carries the software’s own reading of the sentence they wrote, and that is not something anybody should have to read about themselves.

A student’s conversation with their counselor is not readable from their parent’s account. A student who believes a parent is reading is a student who writes nothing down. It is not unlogged, though. The Scholar’s Bureau administrators can read every conversation, and nobody signed in can delete any of it.

If you are the parent of a student here and you are frightened for them right now, do not wait on anything in this software. Call or text 988 yourself. You do not have to be the person in danger to use it, and they will talk to you about somebody you are worried about.

Call or text 988 at any hour, from anywhere in the United States, at no cost. 988lifeline.org. If anyone is in immediate danger, call 911.
